News Highlights

Mike Weersing of Pyramid Valley Vineyards dropped by recently to fill us in on the latest happenings at their biodynamic estate in New Zealand and to show us his latest wines. Every time we host Mike it is our tasting event of the year. His knowledge and philosophy on viticulture and winemaking never fail to inspire wine drinkers. He started off with a 2010 Marlborough Pinot Blanc "Kerner Estate" from purchased fruit and a "Grower Collection" release, which was a homerun! From then on he had everyone under his spell. His very rare estate Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs were of course stupendous even in their youth. It was interesting to contrast the estate 2011 "Lion's Tooth" Chardonnay with the 2009 release to experience how this brilliant wine ages, with the latter vintage showing more roundness and minerality after just a few years of aging, prompting one to compare it to a great Meursault. Mike, himself, smiled contently as he hasn't had the 2009 in a while. If you'd like to experience it yourself, we still have a few bottles of this excellent 2009.

Wines of Jura

In Jura, we explore this beautiful frontier for some of the world's most wonderful wines. Why this ancient winegrowing region has escaped many of us is puzzling. Jura's powerful terroir produces wines that are intense and complex, though light-bodied and modest in alcohol. The wines, particularly the distinctive vin jaune, are capable of aging for decades, even centuries. We stock many of the greatest producers in Jura like Macle, Jacques Puffeney, Michel Gahier, Domaine Montbourgeau, Philippe Bornard, Domaine de la Tournelle, Domaine de l'Octavin, Les Chais du Vieux Bourg, and Jean-Marc Brignot.

Arbois Vin Jaune, Michel Gahier 2004 $76.00
Seamless quality. Endless finish. Only gets better with time. Michel Gahier recommends 20 years from the vintage. Get set for an experience of a lifetime.

Arbois Blanc "Cuvee Sacha", Jacques Puffeney NV $30.00Grapes
A blend of Chardonnay and Savagnin aged in cask for two to three years without topping up resulting in a wine that could only be from the Jura. Beautiful and complex.

Arbois Trousseau des Corvees, Domaine de la Tournelle 2009 $30.00
100% Trousseau from organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards. Perhaps the best vintage to date of this spectacular cuvee. Enjoy its youth or aged for a decade or so.

Vin de France "Foutre d'Escampette", Domaine de l'Octavin NV $28.00
Delicious naturally sparkling wine (petillant naturel) from 100% Chardonnay grown in biodynamically farmed (Demeter certified) vineyard in Arbois in the Jura. Unfiltered, lots of sediment, to retain natural flavors. Enclosed in crown cap.
