Willamette Valley Riesling "Nicholas Vineyard - Chehalem Mountains," Paetra Wine Company 2014

Inventory Status: 8

Bone dry Riesling with vibrant flavors and floral fragrance. 13.17% alc. A mere 45 cases made.

"The Nicholas vineyard is 450 ft. elevation in the Chehalem Mountains AVA. The soil is silt over volcanic basalt that acts as a super-food for grapevines. It has very higt nutrient and water holding capacity which produces thick-skinned berries resulting in spicy, exotic fruit flavors and enormous concentration. We painstakingly hand-sorted the fruit in the vineyard on October 6th and 7th to ensure picking only the ripest, healthiest berries as botrytis had started to set in at this site. The grapes were foot-stomped (in boots) and allowed to macerate for 24 hours before pressing and settling by gravity. The wine fermented in neutral oak barrels spontaneously without commercial yeast addition at very cool temperatures until July 10th 2015 (which may very well be an Oregon Riesling record). it is done very much in the style of Riesling from Alsace or Austria, whihc is to say more powerful and fuller-bodied."
