A stunning 20-year-old Portuguese white that's worthy of comparison to old vintages of Lopez de Heredia's white Rioja. Made from the Arinto grape--one of the oldest Portuguese varieties--it's high acidity, especially when grown near the coast, allows the wine to age for decades while retaining crisp freshness. This single-vineyard Arinto comes from the Quinta do Poco do Lobo estate, situated less than 10 miles from the sea in the northern region of Portugal. The old estate was acquired by Caves Sao Joao back in 1972. Just like Lopez de Heredia, Caves Sao Joan--owned by the Costa family--cellars theirs wines in perfect condition for 20 to 40 years so they can age gracefully before release. They have just started to release their older wines to the US. This brilliant 1995 Arinto from the Quinta do Poco do Lobo vineyard is an amazing opening salvo!
