California Rose, Lorenza 2014

In 2008, Melinda Kearney and her international model daughter, Michele Lorenza Oullett, decided to produce a California rose that's lighter than typical California roses and as dry as the roses they enjoy from the South of France. Through contacts in Napa, they found the exact vineyard they're looking for in the Lodi area in the Sacramento Delta. It is planted with old vines of Grenache, Carignan, Mourvedre, and Cinsault--the same grape varieties used in Provence and the Rhone. The Carignan vines are over 100 years-old! The grapes are hand-harvested and brought in the winery in Lodi at different times, starting with the Grenache and ending with the late-ripening Mourvedre several weeks later. The fruit is quickly pressed whole-cluster, then fermented and aged on the lees in stainless steel. The extended lees contact extract a bit more flavor and mouthfeel, adding to the allure of this perfumed, delicately fruity, vibrant dry rose. The 2014 blend was 44% Grenache, 33% Carignan, 15% Mourvedre, and 8% Cinsault. Only 1,344 cases were produced of this small production California rose.
