North Coast California "Farmstead" Red, Horse & Plow Winery 2013

Inventory Status: 2

Recalls the kind of California wines made during the pioneering era of the 19th and early 20th centuries. 30% Carignan, 25% Zinfandel, 25% Petit Sirah, 15% Syrah, and 5% Grenache. Mainly from Testa Vineyard in Mendocino, which was planted by Gaetano and Maria Testa in 1912. It has some of the oldest organic vines in California and is dry-farmed (non-irrigated), producing concentrated wines with a complex character. The other vineyard source is Grist Vineyard atop Bradford Mountain overlooking Dry Creek. Planted in 1974, the vines have been farmed organically since 2003. Its fruit is highly sought-after by wineries such as Turley and Orin Swfit of The Prisoner fame. But unlike these California Wines, Horse & Plow's Farmstead is not just rich and concentrated but more elegant and balanced and made in small batches. 13.9% alcohol. 700 cases made.
