North Coast Syrah, Arnot-Roberts 2013

The best buy in Arnot-Roberts' range and the one that I always make sure I carry is the North Coast Syrah. It is a blend of Syrah grown in five vineyards: Baker Lane near Sebastopol in Sonoma Coast AVA, Clary Ranch, Griffin's Lair and La Cruz vineyards in the Petaluma Gap area of the Sonoma Coast AVA, and Alder Springs Vineyard in northern Mendocino AVA. The grapes were fermented whole cluster, with about 10% carbonic, using native yeasts. Aged in neutral French oak barrels for ten months before bottling unfined and unfiltered. This has gorgeous, precise Syrah expression in the perfumed nose and rich, dark fruit flavors that persist long on the palate.

"The 2013 Syrah North Coast emerges from a handful of top sites, including La Cruz, Baker Lane, Clary Ranch, Marietta, Griffin's Lair, and, for the first time, Que Syrah. One of the more exuberant, fruit-driven wines readers will taste from Arnot-Roberts, the 2013 Syrah hits the palate with a rush of blue and purplish-toned fruits. Hints of lavender, licorice and cloves add texture to a juicy, forward Syrah endowed with tons of near and medium-term appeal. Saline notes add texture on the finish, but they are nearly buried by the pure luxuriousness of the fruit. What a gorgeous wine this is." 92/100 Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
