"The Signargues vineyard is situated on a plateau that was created by the same forces that created the nearby Chateauneuf-du-Pape plateau and, a bit farther north, the terrace where Mas de Libian grows its vines. It's an ancient river wash from back when the glaciers were melting and the Rhone River was much bigger than it is now. The composition is clay, sand, and galets roules (those large, polished stones). This is a fundamentally different terroir from Gigondas or Cairanne or Beaumes de Venise. In the latter, the soils owe their origins to erosion from mountainous uplifts rather than from glacial deposits. They are limestone based, and tend to be more edgy in flavors and mouth-feel, with a more pronounced sense of minerality. In the river terraces terroirs, there's usually more power and breadth of flavor in these wines, a flavor profile that is far more broad than it is pointed."

This is a blend of 50-50 Grenache and Mourvedre. The unique Signargues terroir allows the late-ripening Mourvedre to be grown successfully, which is rare in the southern Rhone. To ensure the greatness of the terroir is expressed purely in the wine the vineyard is organically farmed and the wine is vinified using natural yeasts, without any enzymes or additives and no addition of sulfites. 2010 is regarded as one of the greatest vintages in the Southern Rhone, perhaps the best in the last 40 years. This is evident in the intense aromatics and the balance between the concentration and freshness of flavors. A remarkable value!
