In Burgundy terroir is everything. If a producer is blessed with the right spot, then he/she wins. This is why wines from the likes of Montrachet, Chambertin, and Corton-Charlemagne are so highly coveted and command the highest prices.

If you're a Burgundy fan but don't have the bucks to spare, there's no need to despair. In southern Burgundy, in the Maconnais, lies one of Burgundy's greatest terroirs: the Clos des Vignes du Maynes. Its wines sell for under $30! The 16.5 acre vineyard is a monopole estate (owned by a single owner) that has been in continuous existence since 910 AD. The current owners, the Guillot family, celebrated the 1,100 year anniversary in 2008.

Throughout its entire 1,000-plus years of existence, the vineyard has never been treated with chemicals, and the Guillot family have kept it that way. The vines planted have remained selection massale. So when you consider the estate and its wines, it's like time stood still. The purity of the terroir is clearly expressed in the wines. Julien Guillot, the family's young vigneron who's now in charge of the estate, vinifies naturally, fermenting with natural yeasts and not using any additives or sulphites. The Macon Cruzille Blanc is the main wine of the estate, made with 25-50 year-old Chardonnay vines. Crisp, with outstanding depth of flavors, this 2012 should age well and reveal more minerality.
