Yannick Rousseau's 2011 Sonoma Valley Merlot, called "Pepe", a tribute to his father, blew me away. It's been a long time--I can't even remember the last time--I've had California Merlot this good. This is like drinking Pomerol! Round, fleshy, expansive, rich blackberry flavors with a long, luscious finish. From fruit grown in Cavedale Vineyards situated at 2,000 feet elevation on the
western slope of Mount Veeder. The vines are farmed organically. Yannick ferments the fruit with native yeasts and ages in Jarnac barrels for 18 months. He only made 72 cases! This is really exceptional. Far more satisfying than most Napa Cabs and Merlots selling for two to three times more.
