Jose-Maria of Bodegas Vendrell-Rived converted his family's 17-hectare vineyards to organic farming soon after taking over in 200. He plows the vineyard to force the roots down. The vines are 50 to 80 year-old Garnacha and Carinena vines that are indigenous to the Montsant area. He blends the two varietals to produce their wines, with Garnacha making up most of the blend because there's a lot more of it planted. However, Josep-Maria makes one wine from pure Carinena (Carignan) that he calls "Miloca Samso." Samso is the Catalan name for Carignan. The fruit comes from some of the estate's oldest Carignan vines planted on granitic soil. Like all his wines, Josep-Maria vinfies this with natural yeasts and and with very minimal intervention as his goal is to make a wine that is expressive of the teruno or terroir. The 2012 Miloca Samso is rich and darkly colored, yet bright and fresh on the palate. It is full and intense, but not heavy, as it is graceful and refreshing to drink. There are only 2 barrels made or 750 bottles.
