Only 5 people run Massa Vecchia, led by Francesca Sfrondrini, who inherited the estate from her parents. They farm the land manually and in the old artisanal tradition of the contadino, without chemicals and with minimum intervention. Massa Vecchia's flagship wine is the La Querciola, made primarily with Sangiovese and some Alicante from 72 year-old vines planted by Francesca's great-grandfather. The La Querciola Vineyard has an extraordinary soil structure. The 2010, from one of the greatest vintages in Tuscany, consists of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Alicante. It was vinified using natural yeasts in open-top chestnut vats and aged in old 10-hectoliter and 5-hectoliter oak casks for 30 months before bottling unfined and unfiltered. No additives were used and no sulfites were added at any time. Well-structured, with gorgeous richness and balance. This shows beautiful energy and can be enjoyed now, but would best with at least 5 years or more of age from the vintage. Only 3200 bottles made.
