Situated in La Rioja Alta, Bodegas Hermanos Pecina is not only one of the staunchest traditionalist, it also adheres to making Rioja as natural as possible, without the use of chemicals and pesticides and without manipulation in the winemaking. Pecina is also somewhat in that its wines consist nearly entirely of Tempranillo, the defining grape variety in Rioja. Now that it's been at least ten years on, it is clear this 2003 Gran Reserva has turned out to be superb. It has good power, but also structure and classic character. The blend consists of 95% Tempranillo, 3% Graciano, and 2% Garnacha from the estate's oldest vines. After spending 4 years in used American oak barrels, it spent another 3 years in bottle before release. The oxidative aging in wood and reductive aging in bottle produced a beautifully balanced Gran Reserva that can develop for many more years.  Excellent aged Riojas like this is truly the greatest values in wine!

"A wine that represents the second great gold seal for Bodegas Hermanos Pecina, an achievement within reach of very few wineries.Despite his 11 years, it occurs with good concentration. The black fruit aromas are expressed with joy and full of life despite his old age. It's Rioja, is big, and these feelings are the best guarantee for a land full of history and great wines. Maturity is perceived, there are no heavy jams, fruit, freshness and a brilliant balance of alcohol and all of its components. Its acidity denotes a superb vineyard and vintage." 95 Puntos and Gold Seal, Guia de Vinos Xtreme 2014, Antonio Jesus Perez Reina
