Valdespino has long produced the Manzanilla Deliciosa, but this "en rama" version--which doesn't go through the usual process of fining and filtration and cold stabilization--only debuted last year. Basically, it is Sherry straight from the barrel. Not stripped of any of its original flavors. The flavors are intense, amped up in high fidelity with lots of flor, saline fruit, and nuts and charming floral aromas. Definitely, deliciosa. The fruit for the Manzanilla Deliciosa comes from Valdespino's Pago Miraflores vineyard in Sanlucar, situated close to the Atlantic. Its white-as-ash, chalky albariza soils retain water to quench the vines during the long, hot summer months. The Sherry is aged in the historic Misericordia solera, the most famous solera in Sanlucar. This is only bottled in half-bottles. Last year, the debut 2013 release, just one bota or barrel was made, about 1,500 half-bottles or 125 cases. This year during the spring 2014 saca, when the flor is most active, Valdespino doubled the production to two barrels or a monumental 250 cases of half-bottles. Wow, that should be enough to satisfy worldwide demand, ya think? At $16 for this superb half-bottle it is an outright bargain and one of the greatest values in the history of wine.
