Bugey Pinot Noir, Famille Peillot 2012

Bugey was ancient part of Burgundy nestled on the southern end of the Jura mountains less than 50 miles from Lyon. Pinot Noir is seldom planted in Bugey these days but fifth generation winegrower Franck Peillot planted a mere hectare on his steep hillside vineyard with Jurassic limestone soils in the Montagnieu terroir of Bugey. He farms the vineyard organically and in the cellar makes the wine as naturally as possible, without any additives and dosing the wine with very low levels of sulfites. The newly released 2012 is gorgeous. Bright, energetic Pinot Noir with flavors of summer red fruits. It's the kind of red to drink on the patio, perhaps with grilled salmon or tuna salad. This wine has a lot of energy so decant it if you would drink it now, or even better lay it down for a few years to take advantage of its full complex potential.
