Saint-Joseph Blanc "Les Oliviers", Domaine Pierre Gonon 2012

Inventory Status: 8

Another superb vintage for one of the greatest of all white northern Rhones. This rivals the whites from Chave and Chapoutier but at a mere fraction of their prices! A single-vineyard white made almost entirely of Marsanne vines dating back to 1958. The site is from the best part of the appellation, on the top of the hill, southfacing. This was vinified and aged in neutral wood for about a year. Only about 700 cases produced. Top quality and an excellent value for high-end Northern White Rhones. Capable of aging for decades but also enjoyable now, especially with winter veggies and stews.

"In the same mold, the 2012 Saint Joseph Les Oliviers Blanc is a rich, textured effort that offers up notions of ripe apples, quince, honeycomb and tinges of flowers in its fresh, pure and balanced profile. I like the 2011 a tad more, but these are both superb whites that age gracefully." 93/100 Jeb Dunnuck, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"(80% marsanne and 20% roussanne): Green-tinged gold. High-pitched aromas of lemon zest, green apple and white flowers, with smoky mineral and ginger notes emerging with aeration. Taut, vibrant citrus and orchard fruit flavors are dry, precise and nervy, with honeysuckle and licorice nuances emerging on the back half. Finishes with excellent clarity and persistence and echoes of citrus fruits and minerals. In a decidedly racy style for this bottling and as deep in mineral character as most white Hermitages out there." 91/100 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
