For many decades now Sociando-Mallet has been one of the most consistent and overachieving producers in Bordeaux, and every vintage is worth the modest price it charges for their wine. However, every decade or so it produces one or two gems that would embarrass top classed growth Bordeaux. This 1990 is one of these historic gems. Through numerous tastings over the past two decades it has been a proven superstar of the 1990 vintage, considered to be one of the greatest vintages in Bordeaux in the past century. A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. Vinified in concrete and stainless steel vats, and aged for 12 months in 100% new oak and another 6 months in neutral vats.

"Still dark, solid and opaque. An opulent and almost exotic style of wine. Rich, exuberant nose and palate. ripe blackcurrant and dark-fruit aromas, with a hint of licorice. Palate sweet, lush, and fleshy. Powerful tannic tram behind. Drink to 2020." 17.5/20 James Lawther MW, The World of Fine Wines--Issue 28 2010

"The 1990 appears to be the finest Sociando-Mallet since the sensational 1982. The wine possesses an opaque purple color, and a tight but promising nose of thick, cassis, blackcurrant fruit, subtle roasted herbs, smoke, licorice, and minerals. Powerful, super-concentrated, and backward, with layers of flavor and high tannin, this striking wine should evolve for 2-3 decades." 93/100 Robert M. Parker, Jr., The Wine Advocate October 2002

"This is an outstanding 1990. The nose is very broody and backward with notes of melted dark chocolate, gravel and a hint of decaying leaves. The palate is very backward with a huge structure. Very tannic and majestic. Spicy, toasty finish. This wine is giving nothing away now, but there is a lovely bacon fat finish. Delicious. From 2012. Tasted April 2005." 92-94/100 Neal Martin, Wine Journal at
