One of the greatest Syrahs produced in California. 100% Syrah from Stolpman's oldest vines in the finest sites in the estate--block 5 with Estrella, Alban, and Peaberry selections. High density planting, no irrigation, and organic and biodynamic farming have resulted in rich, complex, and well-balanced wines. Stolpman is keen on expressing its vineyard site's full potential--being blessed with thin layer of clay/shale soils over a base of limestone--so there is minimal intervention in the winemaking. The wine is aged for 18 months in new 300 liter "cigar" barrels. The result is a big, rich wine, that is seamlessly (14.5% alc) with excellent acidity and very fine tannins. Overall, remarkably balanced, graceful, and expressive. A tour de force in California Syrah! Only 300 six-pack cases made.

"From lighter soils and vines planted in 2000, the 2011 Syrah Angeli comes all from Block 5 of the Stolpman estate vineyard and was fermented with 70% whole cluster. Exhibiting fantastic raspberry, chalky minerality, liquid flower, violets and plenty of spice box qualities, it stays medium-bodied, fresh and elegant on the palate with an overall age-worthy feel. With time in the glass, more and more tannin shows, so give bottles another handful of years in the cellar. It should have 12-15 years or more of ultimate longevity. "The 2011 Angeli is a personal favorite of mine. The vintage was exceptional in its quality. 2011 had a cooler than average growing season, similar to 2010, but without the huge heat storm. This weather combined with a late spring season frost event that greatly reduced yields, produced spectacularly concentrated and balanced grapes. Never before have I seen a vintage that produced wines with so much nuance depending on the origin of their climate and soil type. At Stolpman our Syrah vines planted in pure limestone produced the best wines - mineral, elegant, powerful, and complex. The cuvee was fermented with grapes from both older vines from our 1998 planting and younger vines that come from our 'own-rooted' vineyards planted in 2006. 33% stems were included in the fermentations. The 2011 Angeli will be extremely long-lived and will reach its plateau early. If you decide to drink this early, long decanting is recommended." Sashi Moorman, Winemaker, Stolpman Vineyards
