Douro Branco "Redoma", Niepoort 2010

A superb white from anywhere, but totally surprising to discover this came from Portugal's Douro region! Its elegance and minerality are as impressive as Chenin Blanc from the Savennieres region of the Loire Valley. From a blend of different parcels and varieties planted at a high altitude between 400 and 700 meters. The grape varieties are all indigenous to Portugal and the Dour: Rabigato, Codega, Donzelinho, Viosinho, and Arinto. The fruit was quickly pressed without maceration for freshness, and then was aged for nine months on the lees. Quite mineral, even on the nose. Lush ripe fruit that's beautifully balanced and elegant. What a value!

"The 2010 REDOMA BRANCO, sourced from high altitude vineyards, is a typical old vines Douro white blend (40-80 years), aged for 9 months in French oak and vinified without maloactic fermentation. Quite lovely this year, this melds oak and acidity together beautifully, becoming fresh and graceful, yet lingering quite well on the finish. Gentle, flavorful and classy, it is a very elegant regular Redoma that surprises with its underlying solidity and persistence, despite its affable beginnings. Drink now-2017." 91/100 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
