Cote de Beaune-Villages, Camille Giroud 2008

Made by one of the most talented young winemakers in Burgundy today, David Croix trained with Benjamin Leroux at Comte Armand de Epeneaux before being hired away by Camille Giroud's new American owners, famed Napa vintner Ann Colgin and her husband Joe Wender. Croix has instituted the same approach learned with Leroux, He converted his vineyard sources to organic farming and ensured vines are healthy and yields are limited. In the cellar, winemaking is traditional and new oak is very minimal resulting in wines with purity of expression. This humble 2008 Cote de Beaune-Villages shows remarkable precision and balance. Though it has the bright fruit transparency of the vintage, it doesn't have the tendency to be overacidic, as in many 2008s. Deeply colored and fleshy, beautifully concentrated, with a complex nose and a lovely long finish, this is one of the best buys in 2008 red Burgundies that I've ever come across. Don't miss this gem!
