Pessac-Leognan (Graves) Rouge, Chateau Haut-Bergey 2009

Situated next to Domaine de Chevalier. Its owner, Sylviane Garcin-Cathiard, sister of Daniel Cathiard of Smith-Haut-Lafitte, clearly has very ambitious aims. Since purchasing it in 1991 she has revamped this ancient estate into one of the leading producers in Bordeaux. At this price, it's a steal in the Graves in this vintage!

"A blend of just over 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Merlot (last year I mistakenly wrote that the balance was Cabernet Franc), the opaque ruby/purple-colored 2009 reveals notes of scorched earth/burning embers/charcoal, black currants, ripe cherries and lead pencil shavings. Full-bodied and pure with sweet tannin, this is an under-the-radar, high quality claret to drink over the next 20-25 years." 94/100 Robert M. Parker, Jr., The Wine Advocate
